FAQ

How many dungeons are in Ocarina of Time?
Eight main dungeons, three mini-dungeons and the final dungeon, Ganon's Castle. Three are child dungeons and five are adult temples.
Can you do the Shadow and Spirit Temples in any order?
Yes. After the Water Temple you can do either one first, though most players do the Shadow Temple first because Nocturne of Shadow is taught right after the third medallion.
What is the hardest dungeon in Ocarina of Time?
The Water Temple is famous for it: you change the water level three times and backtrack a lot. Trailers show the remake toggling the Iron Boots with one button, which should remove most of the menu trips.

Child dungeons: the three Spiritual Stones

# Dungeon Where Item inside Boss Reward
1 Inside the Deku Tree Kokiri Forest Fairy Slingshot Queen Gohma Kokiri’s Emerald
2 Dodongo’s Cavern Death Mountain Trail Bomb Bag King Dodongo Goron’s Ruby
3 Jabu-Jabu’s Belly Zora’s Fountain Boomerang Barinade Zora’s Sapphire

With all three stones, go to Castle Town to get the Ocarina of Time, then open the Door of Time in the Temple of Time. Pulling the Master Sword sends you seven years ahead.

Adult temples: the Sage medallions

# Dungeon Where Item inside Boss Reward
4 Forest Temple Sacred Forest Meadow Fairy Bow Phantom Ganon Forest Medallion (Saria)
5 Fire Temple Death Mountain Crater Megaton Hammer Volvagia Fire Medallion (Darunia)
6 Water Temple Lake Hylia Longshot Morpha Water Medallion (Ruto)
7 Shadow Temple Kakariko Graveyard Hover Boots Bongo Bongo Shadow Medallion (Impa)
8 Spirit Temple Desert Colossus Silver Gauntlets, Mirror Shield Twinrova Spirit Medallion (Nabooru)
9 Ganon’s Castle Where Hyrule Castle stood Golden Gauntlets Ganondorf, then Ganon The end

You receive the Light Medallion from Rauru the first time you wake up as an adult in the Chamber of Sages.

Mini-dungeons

Mini-dungeon Age Item inside Why it matters
Bottom of the Well Child Lens of Truth Needed for the Shadow Temple
Ice Cavern Adult Iron Boots Needed for the Water Temple; Sheik teaches Serenade of Water at the exit
Gerudo Training Ground Adult Ice Arrows Optional

What should I bring to each temple?

  • Fire Temple: wear the Goron Tunic, or the heat will drain your hearts.
  • Water Temple: bring the Iron Boots and the Zora Tunic. Clear the Ice Cavern first.
  • Shadow Temple: you need Din’s Fire to open the entrance and the Lens of Truth inside.
  • Spirit Temple: you play part of it as a child (warp there with Requiem of Spirit) and part as an adult.
