FAQ

How many bosses are in Ocarina of Time?
Ten: eight dungeon bosses plus Ganondorf and Ganon at the end. Each of the eight dungeon bosses drops a Heart Container.
What is the hardest boss in Ocarina of Time?
Most players name Bongo Bongo or Twinrova. Bongo Bongo needs the Lens of Truth and quick aim; Twinrova's second phase needs good timing with the Mirror Shield.
Do bosses change in the Switch 2 remake?
Nintendo has shown King Dodongo and Phantom Ganon with new visuals. Whether their patterns change will only be clear after launch on November 5, 2026.

Child bosses

Queen Gohma. When her eye turns red, hit it with the Slingshot (or a Deku Nut) to stun her, then slash. Clear the small Gohma larvae quickly.

King Dodongo. Wait for him to inhale before breathing fire, then throw or drop a Bomb into his mouth. Slash him while he is stunned and dodge when he curls up and rolls.

Barinade. Use the Boomerang to cut the three tentacles linking it to the ceiling, then hit the jellyfish around its body. Once the jellyfish are gone, stun it with the Boomerang and use your sword.

Adult bosses

Phantom Ganon. He rides out of one of the paintings: shoot the real one with an arrow. In the second phase, hit his energy ball back with your sword until he is stunned.

Volvagia. The dragon pops out of the lava holes. Hit its head with the Megaton Hammer, then slash. Keep the Goron Tunic on.

Morpha. Wear the Iron Boots or stay on the edges, Hookshot the nucleus out of the water tentacle, and slash it before it gets back.

Bongo Bongo. Use the Lens of Truth. Shoot both hands with arrows or the Hookshot to stun them, then shoot the eye and slash.

Twinrova. Reflect Koume’s fire at Kotake and Kotake’s ice at Koume with the Mirror Shield. In the second phase, let the shield absorb three blasts of the same element, then release them at Twinrova.

Ganondorf and Ganon. Reflect Ganondorf’s energy balls, then hit him with a Light Arrow and your sword. Against Ganon you start without the Master Sword; use the Biggoron’s Sword or the Megaton Hammer, hit his tail, and reclaim the Master Sword when you can.

Bosses drop the Heart Containers counted on our Heart Piece checklist. See the dungeon order for what to bring, and the items list for where to get each weapon.
